Rep. Severin Honors Summersville Special Education Teacher with House Resolution

MT. VERNON – State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) joined teachers, administrators, staff, and students for a special assembly on Monday afternoon honoring Summersville Grade School teacher Monica Maxey. Rep. Severin previously sponsored a congratulatory House Resolution honoring Mrs. Maxey for being named to the 2023 Curriculum Associates Class of Extraordinary Educators.

“I am proud to have been able to honor Monica Maxey with a congratulatory House Resolution in front of the entire Summersville Grade School. For all of her hard work and dedication, Monica was recognized as one of 30 educators from 22 states that were selected for exhibiting best-in-class use of I-Ready curriculum to illustrate the growth and learning of students,” Severin said. “I told the students at today’s assembly that this is a big deal, and I truly believe that.”

House Resolution 161 passed the Illinois House of Representatives on March 24, 2023. The Resolution, in part, states:

WHEREAS, Monica Maxey, a special education teacher at Summersville Grade School in Mount Vernon for the past 24 years, has made an outstanding professional effort towards improving the education and the lives of students in her classroom, and she has served as an advocate for equitable education to be available to and attainable for all children, and

WHEREAS, In honor of her efforts, Monica Maxey was recently named to Curriculum Associates’ 2023 Class of Extraordinary Educators and joins 110 additional educators
from across the country in receiving this recognition; she was described as a true “rock star” by Curriculum Associates Vice President Emily McCann for her amazing work in the classroom.

“I’m committed to supporting educators in our schools and celebrating their contributions and accomplishments,” Severin said. “Congratulations to Mrs. Maxey and Summersville Grade School!”
