Severin Co-Sponsors Bill to Protect Private Data of Law-Abiding Gun Owners

116th District State Rep. Co-Sponsors Bill Requiring ISP to Destroy Gun-Registry Upon Court Decision Striking Down Gun Ban

BENTON – As a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the firearms and magazine ban signed by Gov. Pritzker in January 2023 works through the judicial system, State Rep. Dave Severin is co-sponsoring legislation that would protect the private information of law-abiding gun owners.

HB 4150 would require the Illinois State Police to immediately and permanently destroy the gun registry of all law-abiding gun owners if Illinois’ gun ban is found unconstitutional.

“As legal challenges work their way through the federal court system, I’m taking action to help protect the private, sensitive information of law-abiding citizens,” Severin said. “The bill I’m co-sponsoring requires the State Police to destroy every endorsement affidavit and all information collected from the endorsement affidavit in possession of the Illinois State Police and any law enforcement agency. Effectively, my bill would require ISP to destroy the gun registry if the gun ban is struck down in court.”

According to the language of the firearms and magazine ban, beginning October 1, 2023 specific firearms purchased before January 10, 2023 are required to be registered with the Illinois State Police by January 1, 2024. The list of firearms required for registration can be found here. The firearms required for registration were also banned from being purchased in Illinois effective January 10, 2023.
