BENTON, IL – State Representative Dave Severin is urging his constituents to sign on to an online petition effort to urge Governor JB Pritzker to veto legislation that legalizes physician-assisted suicide in Illinois. Severin says SB 1950, which passed the Illinois Senate during the recent Veto Session, would legalize the distribution of a lethal cocktail of pharmaceuticals that would lead to the end of a person’s life.
“I do not believe this is the right direction for healthcare in our state, and that this potential new law would put doctors in Illinois in a very difficult position,” Severin said. “I voted no on this legislation back in May, but it has advanced to the Governor’s desk, and it awaits his signature. I believe my constituents are not in favor of physician-assisted suicide, and I want to urge everyone who can to sign my online petition so we can send a message from the 116th district to the Governor’s office that we want SB 1950 to be vetoed.”
The petition language reads as follows.
“We urge you to veto Senate Bill 1950, which would legalize physician-assisted suicide in our state. While we recognize the importance of compassionate end-of-life care, we believe SB1950 poses serious ethical, medical, and societal risks.
Instead of legalizing assisted suicide, we urge you to champion expanded access to hospice, palliative care, mental health services, and support for caregivers—solutions that affirm life and dignity without crossing ethical boundaries.
Governor Pritzker, we ask you to stand with us in protecting the most vulnerable and upholding the integrity of our healthcare system. Please veto SB1950.”
