Illinois EPA Awards 117th District Municipalities Over $2 Million in Low Interest Loans for Clean Drinking Water and Wastewater Systems

BENTON – 117th District State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) announced this week that the Illinois EPA is awarding low-interest loans to local governments and sanitary districts. The city of Hurst in Williamson County, the city of Sesser, and the city of West Frankfort all stand to benefit from the EPA State Revolving Fund loan programs.

“I am pleased to announce that municipalities here in the 117th district in need of financial assistance to improve their water and sewer systems are getting low-interest, partially forgiven loans to make necessary investments, upgrades, and renovations in clean drinking water and new sewer treatment systems,” Severin said.

The village of Hurst will receive $806,000.31 with $362,970 of that amount forgiven for improvements to the existing wastewater collection and treatment systems, which were constructed in 1979. Improvements include rehabilitation of the physical plant, replacement and modification of the chlorination system, and the addition of a dichlorination system.

The city of Sesser will receive a low interest loan of $772,049.70 with $386,024.85 to install a water main, and a new meter reading system to help the city improve their water distribution system infrastructure and continue to provide safe, clean drinking water.

The city of West Frankfort will receive a $774,560 loan with $387,280 forgiven to install radio read water meters and to purchase equipment and necessary software. The investments will improve the city’s water distribution system and allow for more efficient record keeping and billing.

“The hard working people of Southern Illinois deserve clean drinking water and reliable and efficient wastewater management systems,” Severin said. “I am happy to report the investment of more than $2 million is coming to communities that I represent.”
