BENTON – State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) says he’s encouraged by Friday’s decision by US Federal District Court Judge Steven McGlynn that halts the implementation of the state’s recently enacted firearms ban. Severin says he voted against the sweeping legislative measure that passed in the lame-duck session of the previous General Assembly and was signed into law by Governor JB Pritzker in January 2023.
“Law-abiding citizens got a tally-mark in the victory column today,” Severin said. “I’m encouraged by the decision issued today that will halt the implementation of what I believe is a blatantly unconstitutional law. Democrats sold this firearms and magazine ban as an “assault-weapons ban”, when in reality they were assaulting the rights of responsible law-abiding gun owners to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights.”
Severin says Democrats should stop enacting laws that target law-abiding citizens and focus on enforcing the laws already on the books.
“If they truly wish to tackle the rising tide of violence in our state, Illinois Democrats would be well served to end their continuous assault on the Constitutional Rights of law-abiding citizens, prosecute criminals to the fullest extent of the law, stop the insane and dangerous defund the police movement, and give our law enforcement officers they respect and resources they need and deserve.”
