SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) says he is disappointed in the advancement of an amendment to HB 2827, better known as the Homeschool Act, through the House Education Policy Committee on Wednesday. Rep. Severin called the legislation overly burdensome and unfair.
“I have been a strong opponent to this legislation since it was introduced. I led a petition effort against this legislation that gathered thousands of signatures from concerned citizens throughout the state of Illinois. People are waking up to the abuses of the Democrat majority when it comes to overregulation and government intrusion into matters best left to our families,” Severin said. “To me, this bill would be better named as the ‘Homeschool Elimination Act’, as it seeks to make homeschooling unworkable for our valued homeschool families.”
Severin says he believes the House of Representatives would do better to focus on actual problems facing the state.
“We should be tackling our way-too-high tax burden, our budget deficit, our out-of-control crime and immigration problem, and our major issue of public corruption, not attacking homeschool families,” Severin said. “This legislation is an unfortunate distraction from the major issues that we should be addressing, and I look forward to the bill being defeated in the House. I will be voting NO.”
