BENTON, IL – In March 2025, State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) joined fellow House Republican members in signing a letter sent to the Illinois High School Association highlighting the Executive Order signed by President Trump that disallowed men and boys from playing in women’s sports and using women’s private spaces like locker rooms and bathrooms. In part, the letter read as follows:

“It is our understanding that the IHSA has communicated…a policy that establishes a process for transgender students whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth to seek eligibility for the opposite sex’s sport.”

The IHSA has established a policy that allows individuals to compete in alignment with their gender identity.

Severin says that the policy puts women and girls in danger in both their sport and in their private locker room and restroom spaces. The 116th District State Representative has signed on as a sponsor of HB 1117 and HB 4027, both pieces of legislation that would stop the practice of allowing men to compete in women’s sports and invade women’s spaces.

“I strongly believe that stopping the practice of boys and men playing in women’s sports and keeping them out of women’s private spaces is an important step that we must take to ensure fairness and safety for female student-athletes,” Severin said. “I am with President Trump on this issue. This is common sense to most people, and I believe the IHSA and Governor Pritzker should abandon their woke position on this issue and take action to make sports in Illinois schools safe and fair again.”

Severin is also sponsoring a petition drive to collect signatures from constituents who agree that boys and men do not belong in women’s sports or private spaces. The online petition can be signed by visiting https://www.ilhousegop.org/severin_women_s_sports_petition

“I’m asking anyone who agrees with me that boys and men should stick to playing in their own sports and that girls and women who are playing sports in our schools deserve fairness, safety, and privacy in their locker rooms and restrooms. I want my constituents’ voices to be heard on this critical issue.”
